The Effects of Prozac Nation
Depression is a difficult malady to get a hold of. Though it
can be clinically diagnosed, people still have trouble understanding
that it can have such adverse effects on people. Though it deals with a
chemical imbalance in the brain, because it causes more mental anguish
and not too many physical effects, it is a tricky disease to
understand. Everyone has felt the feeling of depression in their lives.
People who have never been diagnosed with clinical depression have a
hard time understanding how people can always feel this depression and
have it alter their lives. On the other side of the coin, people that
may be diagnosed with depression never actively seek out a doctor or
treatment because they figure it’s a normal reaction and emotion. This
interesting dichotomy makes up a term titled the Prozac nation.
The Prozac nation has a difficult time with depression because of the
apparent conflict between two camps. Depression is not easily defined
to begin with, and once it was listed as a clinical disease the Prozac
nation had to throw out the complex definition and replace it with
another complex definition. This worked with a varying degree of
success. Before Prozac, the Prozac nation believed depression was
simply something you had to ride out and hope you didn’t get hurt. It
was a confusing time period and emotions conflicted with each other.
With the introduction of Prozac, the controversy has not subsided. Many
in the Prozac nation believe Prozac is nothing more than a crutch for
people to deal with “everyday life” and that they should “toughen up.”
This is a dangerous belief to take and that notion can hurt a lot of
people. The Prozac nation has to understand that depression is an
actual physical disease, and can affect people physically. Prozac can
help these people with their depression.
